Believe it or not, "What do you get when you multiply six by nine?" is the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything. As explained in Douglas Adams' book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the answer to this question explains the purpose of life….incidentally, the answer is 42.
Which part of the book is that?
Recall the latter portion of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. While on prehistoric Earth, Arthur and Ford realize that they might be able to discover the ultimate question by randomly pulling Scrabble letters from a bag. The random letters spell: "What do you get when you multiply six by nine?"
What is the meaning of 42?
A race of hyper-intelligent, pan-dimensional beings decided to once and for all discover the meaning of life. These beings constructed a huge computer named Deep Thought, which they instructed to find the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything. After 7.5 million years of computation, Deep Thought informed them that the answer was 42.
How does 6 x 9 = 42?
Six times nine does not equal forty two (unless you are working in a base-13 number system). Because the original inhabitants of the Earth died out, the correct question of life, the universe and everything was not computed. This means that although the answer 42 is correct, the question "What do you get when you multiply six by nine?" is not.
Some particularly bright mice have suggested that the correct question may be "How many roads must a man walk down?"
Can’t you explain this better?
